ABOUT DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH INFORMATION MANAGEMENT

The Department of Health Information Management, established in January, 2016, is mandated to train students to professionally manage health information at various health institutions. We train professionals with relevant skills and knowledge to design and develop systems for data collection, storage, manipulation, extraction, management, and dissemination. Our products are equipped to apply the triad, (confidentiality, integrity and availability) in Health Information Management.

The Department offers one (1) full time (regular) and one sandwich programme at the undergraduate level. The department runs a four (4) year Bachelor of Science programme in Health Information Management and a three (3) year (4 semesters) Bachelor of Science (sandwich) in Health Information Management

Vision

The Department seeks to maintain, consolidate and further strengthen its position as a centre of excellence and scholarship in the teaching of Health Information Management, and as a centre of research into relevant Health Information issues.

Mission

Produce graduates who are adequately equipped with critical and analytical skills in order to meet the educational, administrative and other human resource needs of the country as well as provide resource extension and consultancy services to the Ghanaian community in areas of competency.

OBJECTIVES

The objectives of the department are to:

  1. Provide a learning environment and activities that reflect the practical situation.
  2. Prepare graduates with the knowledge, skills and attitudes required to cope effectively and efficiently with the management of health information in various healthcare institutions.
  3. Provide skilled instruction in the use and management of information and information systems for healthcare planning and provision, resource allocation, and decision making.
  4. Provide medical and allied health education of the highest standards through validated curricula to address health needs of Ghana and Africa.
  5. Produce high caliber of medical practitioners and allied health professionals/scientist who will change conventional paradigms through innovative research that will advance the immediate health needs of ordinary people in Ghana and beyond.
  6. Demonstrate knowledge in dealing with the forces impacting healthcare delivery and health information systems.
  7. Apply best practices in decision making regarding the management of health information.
  8. Utilize research methods and critical thinking to create solutions for vital healthcare issues.
  9. Apply the professional, ethical, and legal standards of health information management.
  10. Provide the foundation for future academic progression
